Shifting books at the library the other day, I found a used condom (not a fresh one, either) stashed behind a shelf of J.D. Salinger, so that’s how my week is going!

(Honestly disappointed. If it had been a few bays earlier it would’ve been with the Ayn Rand, which would make a much better joke.)

(This is all in service of a big shifting/condensing project I’m doing with a bunch of 20th century authors. Books on 21st-century authors have been crammed into just one aisle, it keeps filling up and needing to be pared down — all the while there’s space on the aisles downwind, where nobody feels pressured to weed those, even though we definitely don’t need to still have 3 copies of a Salinger biography from 1992.)

*

Nobly resisting the urge to download + start wasting time with a new stupid phone game.

Not sure if I’ve written about this before — my laundry place has an app, and the app has Sponsor Tie-In Offers, where if you reach (let’s say) levels 20, 50, and 100 of Ball Sort Puzzle, you get 5 cents, 13 cents, and 32 cents of credit in your laundry account. I haven’t added IRL cash to the account since this program started.

All this wouldn’t be worth doing if the games were a chore, but they’re engineered to be tiny little dopamine factories. You get a never-ending succession of Tasks, complicated enough to keep your attention, short enough that you’re getting steady hits to the Task Completed! part of your brain. The whole laundry tie-in is really useful for me, because “there is no more laundry credit to be earned from this game” is a built-in threshold for “okay, time to stop playing and delete the app now.”

So I’m currently between games, and missing those dopamine hits. But I know from experience that “oh, I’ll just play five levels, then go back to focusing on comics for a few hours” is a no-go. Like Odysseus needing to be tied to the mast to keep himself from following the Sirens, I need to not have a game app installed to keep myself from opening it.

You gotta set yourself up for success.

Had to bail on Yuletide this year. I gave myself too many end-of-year deadlines to hit, something had to go. (The others are mostly Leif & Thorn stuff — today’s goal is to knock out another round of Volume 7 editing + bonus art.)

At least I did it at the start of the month, instead of denying the problem until the last minute, so my recip won’t be stuck with “a pinch hit that somebody only had a week to write”!

I do have the prompt set open in another tab, in the hopes that I’ll have time/energy to write somebody a quick treat before the collection goes live. It…does not seem likely. But, again, setting up for success, just in case.

Hello, prospective future Yuletide writer! I am ErinPtah on AO3, and here is my gift!fic wishlist this year.

Honestly, I will probably like anything you write for these series. If you want specific prompt ideas, I came up with some new ones this year. Requested the same canons last year, so feel free to mine my prompts from last year's letter too.

General likes:
  • hurt/comfort
  • time travel
  • culture clashes, especially one character in a fish-out-of-water situation
  • taking a weird fantasy/SF situation and earnestly thinking through the logistics
  • crossovers
  • crossdressing + gender-nonconformity

General DNWs:
  • joyless issuefic
  • character-bashing
  • hurt where the hurt character's loved ones don't care about comfort
  • mundane AUs (unless specifically prompted) for fantasy/SF canons
  • heavy references to IRL politics
  • zombies
Oz books, Moon Knight comics, Super Drags )
erinptah: Cat in christmas lights (christmas)

I will do more Yuletide recs at some point, but for now, the gift I got (comicverse Steven/Jake having fluffy headspace sex with feelings, plus the House of Shadows being the best House) is lovely and you should all read it:

The Spaces That Hold Us (4468 words) by estelraca
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Moon Knight (Comics)
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Steven Grant/Jake Lockley, Steven Grant & Jake Lockley & Marc Spector
Characters: Steven Grant (Marvel), Jake Lockley, House of Shadows (Moon Knight)
Additional Tags: Oral Sex, Psychological Drama
Summary: Steven and Jake don’t know where they are, but it feels real enough to hold each other in, and that’s useful sometimes.

Also! At some point in the past I saved a list of several dozen links to art tutorials…and most of them have disappeared from the internet since. Here are the ones that remain. Grab ’em before they go too:

Using gesture in drawing

Using structure in drawing

Group of art/writing tutorials, with a focus on webcomics

How to draw beef…not actually about food, it’s an anatomy tutorial for big muscles

A whole ebook about constructive anatomy

Smashing’s roundup of Traditional Drawing tutorials is very old. Somebody else want to click through and see how many are still available?

Not a tutorial, but a resource: Medieval fantasy city-map generator.

Dorothy and Ozma

Oz books

Characters: Dorothy, Ozma (at least one)

Likes: Dorothy coming into her own as a magic-user. The developing magitech of Oz. Diplomatic relationships with neighboring countries, especially Ev (Ozma of Oz) and the country of the Great Jinjin (Tik-Tok of Oz). Toto's deep nonverbal connection with Dorothy.

Shippy or gen is fine! Please don't pair up Dorothy or Ozma with anyone but each other; aside from that, any pairings are good.

Any take on Gender Feelings for Ozma is fine, but I'd like to see her after the "trying to figure it out" phase. Show me an Ozma who already found a comfortable gender space, moved in, and picked out the curtains.

Books are public domain, so you can read them all for free on Project Gutenberg! (And there's a series of reread reaction posts on my Land-of-Oz tag.)

Optional specific prompts:

- Dorothy/Ozma wedding fic. If Ozma's birthday was a book-defining event, the Royal Wedding of Oz must be even more extravagant. What are the Oz traditions here? What elements do Henry and Em suggest from Kansas-style weddings? How many more different magical countries (maybe from crossover series -- Narnia, Labyrinth, Wonderland, Arendelle) send guests? Who tries and fails to crash the party?

- A mini-adventure with Dorothy and the Patchwork Girl. Something that shows off how Scraps has brains as good as the Scarecrow, she's just a lot more whimsical in how she uses them.

- Dorothy goes back to the US for a visit (maybe to see all-grown-up Cousin Zeb? or his descendants?), and it's nothing but culture clashes now that she's grown up with Oz norms. Extra bonus points if she brings Ozma, who has it even worse.

Jake and Steven scolding Marc

Moon Knight (Comics)

Characters: Steven, Jake (all)

Likes: Headmates who love and support each other -- no matter how much heckling, power-struggling, and bickering they put each other through. Superhero characters who need therapy, and are actually getting it (and it's not a magic fix, but it sure is better than nothing). Characters who only interacted with one member of Team Moon Knight in the past, getting cautiously introduced to the whole system. Unlikely friendships between all the different weird types of people that exist in the Marvel universe.

Any combination of gen or shipping between Marc+Steven+Jake is good with me.

If you include any of their canon romances, please focus on the good parts! For example, I'd be great with "system watching movies with Tigra and her kid" or "Marlene walks in on Marc practicing superhero catchphrases," but I don't want to read about "Marc making Tigra cry on a rooftop" or "Marlene walks in on Marc wearing a dead guy's face."

Optional specific prompts:

- We now have a 616 version of Layla El-Faouly!...but the writing in the City of The Dead miniseries has been discontinuous and uncomfortable in a lot of ways. Can I get a backstory for "how Layla found out about the DID" that makes sense for the comicverse characters? It's weird for her to know the actual medical diagnosis, since he was still in denial about needing one for a lot of his early Moon Knighting years, and this Layla's relationship with Marc was all pre-Khonshu...but let her meet Steven and Jake. Have them pop out for some reason during a mercenary job. Give Layla a chance to ask questions -- not invasive "let me dissect you" questions, but reasonable "if I'm going to date this guy, I'd like to know what his deal is" questions.

- Fic about the House of Shadows enthusiastically taking care of its new residents. I got one of these last year, would read a hundred more. Does an eldritch interdimensional piece of sentient architecture understand what squishy depressed mortals need? Not really! Is it going to do its very best anyway? Sure is. Feel free to take this in a "wacky hijinks" direction, or a "psychological horror hurt/comfort" direction.

- Headspace sex, making use of the different internal settings we've seen. I'm thinking they have fun with scenarios like "Jake shows up to fix the plumbing at Steven's office, seduces him on his desk" or "stealing Captain Spector's spacecraft, flying it to the Planet of Makeouts, and getting it on in the back seat." Maybe when Steven or Jake is fronting, the other one uses this to keep Marc distracted so he doesn't get in the way...

Vel and Malori

Mage & Demon Queen (Webcomic)

Characters: Malori, Velverosa (all)

Likes: Malori's shameless thirst. The other demons' shameless shipping. The comedy in general. I loved the long-term slow-burn of Vel coming to accept Malori's feelings, but I'm also delighted that they Actually Got Together and the comic is still going. Not super gripped by the political intrigue, other than hoping it all works out. I do like Leora, though.

Shippy or gen is fine, just please don't pair Malori or Vel with anyone but each other! ...Unless you're thinking polycule.

Read the comic for free here!

Optional specific prompts:

- Vel/Malori, sex with hijinks! Are they trying to hide from a nosy underling? Are human and demon kinks/erogenous zones/basic sexual functions different in surprising ways? Does Vel uncontrollably turn into a dragon when she's turned-on enough? Make it magic, make it weird, make it fun.

- Reverse isekai where Malori gets summoned into Cerik's world. Maybe she has some form of communication with her friends back home, so Cerik can give advice (and everyone else can try to give advice)? But the fish-out-of-water awkwardness is strong.

- Setting AU that give Malori/Vel a different dynamic than human/demon. Sci-fi where Vel is the alien queen? Cyberpunk where Vel is a sentient virus? Superhero where Vel is that one powerful politician who's trying to get heroes canceled? (A few years ago, I wrote "Locked Tomb AU where Vel is a Resurrection Beast" mostly as a joke, then Nona the Ninth has come out...)

And finally...

Was anybody going to tell me that Netflix has a saucy original comedy about magical drag queens?

Super Drags posing

Super Drags (Cartoon)

Characters: Patrick | Lemon, Ralph | Safira (at least one)

Likes: The affectionate parody of magical-girl tropes. The way it's overtly, messily pro-queer, full of love and support for a wide range of people with all their different strengths and flaws. The way it manages to pair "thoughtful, nuanced portrayal of inter-community issues" with "there is a dick-shaped robot assistant called D.I.L.D.O."

Canon-typical levels of ridiculous sex jokes not required, but if you go for that, I'll enjoy it. (Some of these prompts have younger kid characters in them; I would also like a canon-typical level of "not involving the kids in the sex jokes.")

Shippy or gen is fine, all ships are fine. Ralph/Junior Pedroso was adorable, but feel free to pair either with somebody else, too.

I wrote a whole post gushing about this series the year it came out, with links to trailers and other promo material! Feel free to mine that for other canon feelings/potential story hooks.

Optional specific prompts:

- Future fic where Ralph's little sister comes out as some flavor of LGBTQ (pick a letter, any letter), and they do queer sibling bonding. Going to a Pride parade? Or a drag show? The sister having a crush on someone, and Ralph being a terrible overenthusiastic wingman?

- Do the Sailor Moon riff: somebody's kid from the future drops out of the sky, and tells the present-day Super Drags they need to stop villains from taking over the world. Your choice which Super Drag is the parent! Any of them has potential for a ton of funny reactions from the other two.

- Crossover with another magical-girl series (or several!), helping solve their problems. Maybe by teaching them to channel their Highlight (have you ever seen a straight magical girl), maybe just with an overwhelming show of sass and dick jokes. I'm the biggest fan of Sailor Moon and Madoka Magica; would also be into Tokyo Mew Mew, Princess Tutu, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Cardcaptor Sakura, even Miraculous Ladybug or Steven Universe. Or introduce me to something new!

I’ll start adding Yuletide fic to the regular multifandom rec posts at some point. And, as usual, all my fic recs are gathered on Tagpacker, where you can filter by fandom and pairing and other good things.

But first, a post on what I gave + what I got!

I was one of the people who originally nominated the Moon Knight comics to the tag set (and then went to the evidence post to distinguish it from the definitely-ineligible MCU TV series; here’s the disambiguation comment, since I’ll probably want to reuse it next year).

Got an amazing comicverse fic as my gift! It’s from the 2021 run, and it’s all about how the House of Shadows knows one (1) trick — manifesting dangerous horrors beyond mortal comprehension — but now that it has a Favorite Human to take care of, it’s going to use that trick to Help.

The Homes We Need (5131 words) by estelraca
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Moon Knight (Comics)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Steven Grant & Jake Lockley & Marc Spector, Jake Lockley & Greer Grant Nelson, Steven Grant & Matt Murdock, Marc Spector & T’Challa
Characters: Jake Lockley, Steven Grant (Marvel), Marc Spector, The House of Shadows
Additional Tags: Character Study, Healing
Summary:

The House of Shadows does its best to protect those who have offered it a home, though the people who visit don’t always appreciate the pains it is going through to do so.

Someone else nominated the 2021 (MacKay) run specifically, and everyone else’s Yuletide fic ended up being MacKay-era. But I pitched nominating the comics in general, just to keep my era options open…and it paid off when I found someone requesting a comicverse take on Layla.

Which is how I got this:

Scarlet and Moonlight (4767 words) by ErinPtah
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Moon Knight (Comics), Moon Knight (TV 2022)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Marlene Alraune/Steven Grant, Gena Landers & Jake Lockley
Characters: Layla El-Faouly, Marlene Alraune, Marc Spector, Steven Grant, Jake Lockley, Gena Landers
Additional Tags: Marvel 616/MCU Crossover, Comics AU Layla El-Faouly, Layla El-Faouly-centric, Multiplicity/Plurality, Team Moon Knight is in So Much Denial, Alternate Origin Story, POV Outsider
Series: Part 16 of standalone Moon Knight fics
Summary:

Phantom thief Layla has finally tracked a stolen artifact to some rich couple’s collection. Shouldn’t be too hard to break into their mansion and retrieve it, right? This Steven Grant and Marlene Alraune are probably total pushovers.

(Spoiler alert: they are not total pushovers.)

In research for this, I also went and looked up the issues with the original 616 Scarlet Scarab. They’re, uh, not good. It’s a throwback-to-WWII book about a team consisting of mostly white-American and white-British superheroes, for these specific issues they’re fighting in Egypt, and they call themselves…The Invaders. This is not ironic! They earnestly think this is a cool Avengers-style name for a good-guy team-up!

So a researcher called Dr. Abdul Faoul gets himself some superpowers, calls himself the Scarlet Scarab, and starts fighting the Invaders. Namor is the only team member to say “uh, you know, this guy might actually have a good point.” The group’s only substantial selling point to Dr. Faoul is “we aren’t as bad as the Nazis,” and that’s not exactly a high bar to clear!

For all the other nonsense that shows up in the Moon Knight comics, at least they’re always clear on “Marc’s vigilante history as a white American mercenary in the Middle East/North Africa was a bad thing.”

The first big thing I wanted to do with comicverse Layla, then, was “she tries to retrieve an artifact that rightfully belongs in her home country, and once Marc-and-company figure out her deal, they agree 100% that Layla should have it.”

The second big thing was contrasting the comicverse Marlene/Steven-and-the-guys romance with the TV version of Layla/Marc-and-the-guys. Which is why I wanted to use a version of the 1980s status quo — it’s the point in the comics that’s most similar to Layla/Marc in the MCU, in terms of “their relationship is pretty good day-to-day, but Team Moon Knight is keeping some major secrets, even though their love interest is very firm that she just wants them to be honest (and has so far been cool with every weird thing she does know about).”

As a reader, you know that if this universe goes the same way as mainline canon did, Team MK is going to implode that relationship eventually. (Also their relationship with Duchamp, and Gena, and basically all the Avengers except Tigra, and, and, and…)

But it leaves the tantalizing possibility that they might not! The route to “being honest and forthright and developing actual coping skills” — the route that we hope MCU Team MK will take — is still open. At least for now.

…and Marlene is low-key aware that Team MK might blow everything up, and has made the conscious decision that the good times right now are worth having, whether they last forever or not.

I wrote one other Yuletide fic! And for once, it’s not related to Moon Knight at all!

Jeeves & Wooster is one of my standby offers, a thing I’m always confident I can write. (Along with the Oz books.) I wouldn’t have offered Wings, the 1990 TV series…but as luck would have it, it was on Hulu until not long before Yuletide assignments went out, so I had recently rewatched a bunch…and the recip requested both series, and said they liked crossovers, and wham.

There Once Was A Man From Whatsit (2704 words) by ErinPtah
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Jeeves – P. G. Wodehouse, Wings (TV 1990)
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Bertram “Bertie” Wooster, Reginald Jeeves, Brian Hackett
Additional Tags: Crossover, Alternate Universe – 1990s, Canon Past Character Death, POV Bertram “Bertie” Wooster, Brother Feels
Summary:

Columnist Bertie Wooster, accompanied by his PA Jeeves, catches a flight out of Nantucket on Sandpiper Air…during which Jeeves steers him into a surprisingly heartfelt chat with Captain Hackett.

(Canon setting for Wings, some time around the middle of the show. “AU where the whole series happened in the 1990s” for J&W.)

Brian’s parents were MIA from a young age, close to the general fanon about when Bertie’s died, which got me thinking about what a good conversation they could have (and how masterfully Jeeves could prompt them to have it!)…and the rest snowballed from there.

I didn’t remember the exact age, or all the particular details about what happened to each parent, so it’s a good thing there’s a Wings wiki. In the days after assignments went out, I was basically haunting the site during my commute, making sure all the details lined up.

A perfect case of “this fic never in a million years would’ve existed without Yuletide, and boy am I glad I got the assignment that prompted it.”

You can’t tell now, because I redated everything after reveals — but this was legit the 4th fic added to the Yuletide 2022 collection. That’s how fast it came together.

Other people get candy or toys in their stockings, I got the Omicron variant. Lucky me.

…seriously, though, it was the better kind of COVID experience. No hospital, no breathing problems, no need for any of the expensive treatments that are in short supply. I just canceled holiday plans, spent a few days sleeping a lot, had a friend drop off some chicken soup, and used over-the-counter fever/cough/etc meds to keep the symptoms in check.

Over a week of doing that, my immune system wrestled it steadily down from “thoroughly miserable” to “minor sniffles.”

And if you’ve been hearing people on the news panic about how Booster Shots Wear Off In Weeks And Then Omicron Can Kill Us All…listen, I didn’t even have a booster. Probably could’ve had milder symptoms if I did? But even un-boosted, the two regular Pfizer doses I got back in summer had the virus handled.

(The cat helped, I’m sure. He was very fierce at it. Scared it right off.)

Marshmallow Fluff having a Christmas nap

I had almost wrestled my Marked For Later list down to 5 pages when Yuletide dropped, and now it’s overflowing. At least reading has been easy for most of the COVID recovery period, so I’ve had time to start making a dent again.

I got 2 gifts!

I've already read (and received) (and written!) a good amount of "uncertain Ozma does gender-related experiments" fics -- show me an Ozma who already found a comfortable gender space and is joyfully inhabiting it.

I did a major Baum reread a few years ago; there are reaction posts on my land-of-Oz tag. Feel free to mine that for other canon feelings/potential story hooks.

Optional specific prompts:

The Locked Tomb Trilogy - Tamsyn Muir

Characters: Harrow, Gideon

Likes: Gideon in all her sarcastic, obstinate, sword jock lesbian glory. Gideon/Harrow with their weird hostile loyalty. Little details about space travel and the different living conditions/worldbuilding necessities on different planets. The casual absence of homophobia. Other favorite characters include Camilla and Palamedes, Isaac and Jeannemary, Abigail and Magnus.

Optional specific prompts:

- AU where the main characters are adults, came together as a group voluntarily, and are working toward a common goal. (Just not a mundane AU, as per DNWs.) They can still be dysfunctional and antagonistic, I just want more time to roll around in the Team Feelings, you know?

- Comedy with Gideon and Harrow doing something low-stakes together. Baking a cake? Playing a video game? Going for a boat ride? The important thing is, it's not life-or-death stakes if they fail. Up to you whether they pull it together and succeed, bicker and sabotage each other until it all goes down in flames, and/or end up making out and get too distracted to finish.

Long-Shot Crossover Prompt 1: the mining ship Red Dwarf finally returns to our solar system, only to find that in the past 3 million years it's been...overrun with necromancers? Rimmer is immediately on the "great, give me a new body" train, Kryten tries to prove to Harrow that he's not totally obsolete compared to her skeletons, Gideon and Lister bond over the horror of being isolated in the far reaches of space with nothing to get off to except porn mags and your insufferable best frenemy...

Long-Shot Crossover Prompt 2: The Secret Garden but Mary is a necromancer, who (unwittingly?) used her powers to survive the plague that wiped out her family. Meanwhile, everyone expects Colin to have inherited the power, and therefore of course he's supposed to be frail and sickly, why would he get to be anything else? Lovingly detailed scenes of Mary manipulating and restoring dead flowers/branches/roots. Colin shapes up to be a fine Cavalier Primary once everyone stops pushing him to use bones and just lets him have a rapier.

If you write that one, feel free to have canon characters (including Gideon + Harrow) appear in background roles, or not at all. (I would've put TSG itself in my fandom requests, but that didn't seem fair when the only fic I really want for it is the fusion...)

Mage & Demon Queen (Webcomic)

Characters: Malori

Likes: Malori's shameless thirst. The other demons' shameless shipping. The comedy in general. I loved the long-term slow-burn of Vel coming to accept Malori's feelings, but I'm also delighted that they Actually Got Together and the comic is still going. Not super gripped by the political intrigue, other than hoping it all works out. I do like Leora, though.

(Does "Locked Tomb AU where Vel is a Resurrection Beast" even make any sense or)
erinptah: Vintage screensaver (computing)

I gave New Computer another update — this time making a point of backing up a bunch of stuff, just in case I had to do another reinstall from scratch.

Not only did the process go fine, the camera works again!

(This update was only released a couple weeks ago, and the camera-breaking update was a couple months ago, so it’s not like I could’ve just done that from the start. Someone on the development end had to fix what they broke.)

…so, ah, fingers crossed that it’ll fix the other weird problem, where the computer spontaneously decides it wants to reboot into a diagnostic scan. Which always finds no problems, just like all the previous scans.

Plot twist: I paid more attention to when these happen, and the last 3 times were on Thursday afternoon. So this past Thursday morning, I shut down the computer completely, then headed out to work.

I get home, and it’s on this screen again. Something in here didn’t just reboot the OS, it autonomously powered the machine on.

I mean. What even does that?

The camera-fixing update was later that evening, so I guess we’ll find out “did it also fix the spontaneous diagnostics?” next Thursday.

Had an extensive dream that was an AU of The Secret Garden, but Mary Lennox was a tween necromancer, Gideon the Ninth style.

…and now that I think about it, the parallels are there? Not to Harrow, I mean to Gideon’s backstory of “was a small child when a fatal affliction swept through the whole group around her, later retrieved after being discovered surrounded by bodies.”

Maybe I’ll request it for Yuletide, or something.

It’s that magical time of year when I put Kickstarter logos in all my social-media icons, re-re-proofread all my ad copy, and anxiously look up how much it costs to ship a 5-pound box to Germany.

(Just over US $70.)

That’s right, it’s the final-week prep for Leif & Thorn volume 4.

Please click that link and hit the “Notify me on launch” button, if you haven’t already!

And folks, I am so close to the weight where, if someone wants All The Leif & Thorn Books, the cheapest method is to pack them in a Flat Rate box. 4 books isn’t quite there — but at 5 books the flat rate is cheaper, and at 6 it’ll be much cheaper, and once we get up to 9 it’ll be astronomically cheaper.

…when we get to 10, they won’t all fit in a single box. But that’s a future problem.

(Not that I’m going to do this, but: there would be something really satisfying about drawing enough to fill 9 books, and then stopping the comic, just so it’s a perfect fit for the boxes.)

erinptah: Cat in christmas lights (christmas)

It started snowing on the night before Christmas, and kept going on-and-off ever since, so everything outside the window is carpeted with perfect winter scenery. Seeing as I don't have anywhere to go, this has been great.

I got an absolutely heartwarming Yuletide fic, a new take on "Ozma decides to spend some time in Tip form", featuring some quality Worried Dorothy and Protective Aunt Em:

Homecoming (6127 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Oz - L. Frank Baum
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Dorothy Gale/Princess Ozma
Characters: Princess Ozma, Dorothy Gale, Aunt Em
Additional Tags: Comfort, Genderqueer Character, genderqueer character misread as male, mentions of past emotional / physical abuse, aunt em has a bunch of unexamined gender and class biases
Summary:

A nice young person with experience on a farm comes to help Aunt Em with the chores for a celebration.
Meanwhile, Ozma isn't in the Palace, and Dorothy goes looking for them.

More rec posts to come. I've been churning my way through all the promising-looking fandoms, trying to read everything in-the-moment instead of letting it disappear into marked For Later.

...with the exception of a bunch of Locked Tomb fics, because I'm still only 80% through Harrow the Ninth (the second novel), and any time I've looked at post-Harrow writing for more than 5 seconds I've been spoiled for something. (Fortunately, there are So Many wild and unpredictable twists that it's turned out I was still unspoiled for most of them.)

On less fandom-y notes:

Half my family is being scrupulous and careful about COVID restrictions, and the other half is...not. I don't know what to say. They've already had two scares (notable COVID-like symptoms that ended up testing negative), you'd think that would make them more cautious, not less. The hospitals are full of people who thought "oh, nothing bad will happen to me." And by "full" I mean record-breaking cases, record-breaking deaths, "lining up beds in the hallways because all the rooms are occupied" full.

This Week In Virology had a good discussion of the new COVID variant that's developed in the UK, including a breakdown of why it's not likely to be more vaccine-resistant than any other variant. There is a serious chance it's more transmissible, but even if that's true, it's not so transmissible that it can overcome all the usual measures -- keeping distances, wearing masks, washing hands.

So we just have to stay serious about doing those.

First, a PSA:

8tracks is shutting down. In 3 days. They did install an automatic "save playlist to Spotify" button to back up everything before they go...so I guess I'm finally getting a Spotify account, huh.

I got a delightful Yuletide fic!

It looks like this:

curiosity and candy (makes the world go round) (3481 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Pet Shop of Horrors
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Count D/Leon Orcot
Characters: Count D (Pet Shop of Horrors), Leon Orcot
Additional Tags: Swearing, Canon Era, Canon-Typical Behavior, Canon-Typical Levels Of BDSM References, yes this is a tag now, Yuletide, Supernatural Elements
Summary:

Word has gotten out that Leon is D's new chosen mate, and the supernatural is pretty eager to test out his worthiness for the role.

Shame that Leon hasn't been informed of any of this.

I also gave one, in a niche-enough fandom that it's barely gotten any attention -- but, listen, the recipient liked it, so it's a win.

Slowly working my way through the rest of the archive, but I have a bunch of pre-Yuletide fic recs that I haven't even queued yet...so the rec posts of not-for-me Yulefics may take a while in coming.

I subscribed to Hulu With Live TV for the month, purely so I can watch the new Steven Universe episodes before the internet has a chance to spoil them.

Seriously, the speed at which people can draw fanart of totally-new character designs is unreal.

And during the rest of the eek, I'm trying to make the most of the subscription by bingeing as much other Hulu-exclusive content as possible. Caught up on Archer and a smorgasbord of superhero movies, still working through Family Guy and The Resident, got an apprehensive eye on Stargate Universe.

Surprisingly entertained by Gary And His Demons. (Satirical commentary on Chosen One narratives, Rick-and-Morty-type dysfunction-based humor, our hero has a magical-girl-style transformation sequence for which he sings his own theme song...it's a lot.)

...they have over 300 episodes of ER. And it's excellent background-watching-while-making-comics TV. I may or may not end up going another month with this.

Speaking of avoiding spoilers: I saw Frozen 2!

It was enjoyable, don't get me wrong, but also awfully weird. Go watch Jenny Nicholson's review for a good, thoughtful, funny breakdown of a lot of the reasons why.

Haven't been any other movies since Endgame that I was really determined to see in theaters. Considered it for Star Wars: The Final Movie For Real This Time Really, but at this point I've been spoiled for enough of the reveals that, eh. Might as well wait until it's out on streaming, and pick that time to do a free Disney+ trial period.

Decided to bake cookies for Christmas at the last minute, which had me trawling the internet for "recipes that can be made using the ingredients currently in my cupboards" on Christmas Eve.

Sidenote: I have seen so many retail outlets this year advertising "our stores are open on Christmas Eve! and will even have limited hours on Christmas Day!", and, guys, that is not something to brag about. Go watch one of the thousands of adaptations of A Christmas Carol, then swallow your profit motive for a couple days and give your people the time off, already.

So I wasn't going to go buy late-night groceries, because I am not a monster, and here's the recipe I was able to make. It's just flour, butter/margarine, brown sugar, and vanilla. Plus a bag of butterscotch chips, because I do what I want.

They were a hit at the family dinner! Then a hit again when I brought the leftovers to work. Go make 'em some time. Mix up the base with your own (premeditated or improvised) favorite add-ins.

Wordpress was offering a deal on paid blogging plans, and it was cheap enough that I sprung for it.

...only to find out it doesn't include any customization that wasn't already in the free version. You have to pay twice as much to control your own CSS.

Oh well. I've gotten enough value out of WP over the years that they've probably earned the donation.

Prompted me to finally look for a new theme, too. Took way too long to find something that was (a) 2 columns, (b) didn't collapse to 1 column when you weren't practically fullscreen on desktop, (c) had spaces to keep all my widgets and menus, and (d) didn't have clashing colors in places that non-paying users weren't allowed to customize.

Came out pretty nice, I think.

The theme is Bouquet. The header image and the purple background are customizable. All the pink is one of two pre-set options (the others are blue and orange), which thankfully coordinates with the header pretty well.

Apparently it's also infinite-scroll and I don't know how to turn that off, but oh well, you can't have everything.

Bumped up to the next-higher dose of Wellbutrin a couple months ago, and it's been a smashing success.

Before the switch, it had gotten to the point where I was sleeping 10+ hours a day, and could feel the not-getting-anything-done. (Doesn't help that I have a longer Day Job workweek these days -- it's great in most ways, but having it eat up all my awake time was a bit of a drawback.)

First week on the new dose, I felt refreshed, could focus way better, and was able to draw more than I got to do in probably the whole month before.

Turns out taking the higher dose too many days in a row leaves me not sleeping enough...but by now I've got the hang of swapping in the lower dose before I start to feel too wired, and it's balancing out really well.

The last Leif & Thorn Kickstarter alternately feels like it happened forever ago, and like it just ended last week.

The first unbound proof arrived a whole month ago, in November:

I ended up tweaking both files, and asking for a new proof of just-the-cover. (There was some tricky color correction involved -- you don't know exactly how it'll come out in CMYK until you see it in person.)

So the new one arrived...and somewhere between the file I sent and the paper coming out of the printer, the colors got changed in ways I didn't do. Not in a way they would notice when quality-checking, either -- it looked perfectly-balanced, which is the problem, it's supposed to have a purple tint.

(Volume 1 was pink-tinted. Volume 3 -- the one with the magic vine attack -- will be green. Volume 4 is shaping up to be red.)

The company blamed an equipment failure, apologized, and sent a free replacement. I now have 3 separate copies of this cover, and the books themselves are gonna be in production...any day now. Depends on when people come back from vacation.

I drew 2 full pages ahead in BICP!

Then decided the events of those pages should be bumped back to happen after other events. Which leaves me in the fascinating position of "two pages of scanned and fully-polished lineart, still hasn't gotten me ahead re: the page I'm supposed to post on Monday."

...One of my New Year's resolutions is to actually finish the series in 2020. Fingers crossed.

Marshmallow Fluff continues fluffin' along.

I did a family visit that left him alone for the weekend, and he seems to have coped just fine:

No special Christmas dinner for Fluff, because he started turning up his nose at canned food a while back. I figure it's a good thing -- he's no longer afraid of imminent starvation, so he feels secure enough to be picky -- but it really cuts down on my "treats to provide for special occasions" options.

He also sometimes sits on one end of the couch while I'm sitting on the other! And almost relaxes. I get the joy of having a judgmental mop staring at me.

Shard prompted "List off any gifts you received over the holidays, and if you'd like and/or want to fill space, tell us which one(s) you like most and why."

Okay, first one is this lovely Yuletide fic, which I'm pretty sure is the longest I've ever gotten, phwoah:

Holiday Hours (find us where we want to be) (11338 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 2/2
Fandom: Pet Shop of Horrors
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Count D/Leon Orcot, Chris Orcot & Leon Orcot, Chris Orcot & Pon-chan & T-chan | Tetsu, Count D & Chris Orcot & Leon Orcot
Characters: Chris Orcot, Leon Orcot, Count D (Pet Shop of Horrors), T-chan | Tetsu (Pet Shop of Horrors), Pon-chan (Pet Shop of Horrors), Honlon (briefly)
Additional Tags: Found Family, Christmas Fluff, Unresolved Emotional Tension, Surprise Party, POV Alternating, Yuletide 2018
Summary:

Where a pet shop in Chinatown explores the true meaning of Christmas, and what was obvious all along is finally realized. At least, in part.

Featuring, the cast of:

A Very Oblivious Detective (Leon Orcot)
A Very Put Upon Shop Owner (Count D)
All I Want For Christmas Is to Make People Happy (Chris Orcot)
A Merry Band of Misfits (T-chan and Pon-chan)
And Background Gossips (who ship it)

I haven't even gotten a chance to comment yet, it's so long -- but if you're in the fandom, go give it some kudos.

There are some family visits coming up in January, and more things designated Christmas Presents will be handed around then. Like I said in an earlier post, we're not real sentiment about specific dates.

So far: all the RL gifts are practical and useful, but not much to blog about. Literally towels, hangers, a chest of drawers, an afghan, a vacuum cleaner. A couple of large checks, some of which is getting invested in fandom merch (there are a few webcomic collections I've had my eye on), most of which will go toward rent, groceries, and my IRA.

Adulthood, everyone!
